After the partition of India in 1947, it became East Bengal (later East Pakistan), a province of Pakistan, separated by 1,800 km from West Pakistan. In 1971, Bangladesh gained independence, with Dhaka as its capital.

The country shares borders with India to the west, north, and east, as well as Myanmar to the southeast. Its southern coastline opens into the Bay of Bengal.
